John_B, ever since I turned 18 and became an "adult" in the eyes of this society, I've looked into becoming a legal resident. Unless I marry a legal citizen and go back to Mexico and wait God knows how long, my options to do the "legal" things are very small. Going back to Mexico would be nice. I haven't seen family members for years, but what about the life I would leave behind here at home? Did you know that it could take up to 10 years to get a response from immigration? Do I want to legitimize myself and get out of the shadows? Of course. If my story sounded like some sort pity-me rant, I apologize. Every human being has their story and this is mine. This is my struggle to try to do the right thing and stay out of trouble by bettering myself. But it has come with a cost.
So to make you understand a little bit more John_B, yeah, I've tried doing the right thing, but the answers I'm looking for are not there. I don't know if I'm ready to lose everything I've accomplished.....

I agree that some deserve citizenship but many do not. California tax payers spent over 9 billion on illegals in 2007. Broke L.A. wants to give Mexican truckers 2.5 million to repair their trucks, plus 1.5 million for a library in mexico.

I wouldn't worry about it much. When Mc Cain or Obama get into the oval office one of the first things they're going to do is make 40,000,000 illegal aliens into permanent residents. I'd bet money on it. I'd guarantee it. You'll be able to do whatever citizens here do. Read about the elements included in the June congressional bills of last year for an idea of how large and numerous the loopholes will be to make sure no one gets deported. The Democratic gains in the congress this November will assure that opposition to such a bill will be swept away in short order. We're going to be just one big, happy family when next year rolls around...though I can't guarantee That.

An Open Letter to “Anonymous”:

I’m a white guy. I’m almost 50. I’m married to a wonderful lady, have four great kids, a good career and friends and pets and a home and most of the other trappings of a free society that many in our great nation so often seem to take for granted. I am truly blessed to have been born in the United States. Because of that simple accident of birth location, I was gifted with access to far more opportunity, considerably more options and infinitely more in the way of civil and human rights than many of those born elsewhere in the world.

I can’t imagine all of the challenges, choices and anguish your parents were facing back when you were 11, although your story, here, has helped me to understand them a little better than I might have otherwise. By the time I was 11 my parents were long divorced, my mom deceased, my dad working hard at converting his blue-collar job into a white-collar career, and my older sister and I constantly fighting about whatever silliness it is that 11 and 13 yr old siblings fight about.

Please believe me when I say that I am neither racist, nor ethno-centrist nor jingoist. I am just a fairly conservative middle class white fellow and military veteran who strongly believes our federal government should…no *must*…be permitted to do only a relatively few things for us and that one of those things is properly securing our national borders.

Properly securing our national borders is a right the United States enjoys (or should) along with every other sovereign nation on the planet. Thus in desiring and attempting to accomplish this task the United States is not, in any manner, attempting to victimize or repress anyone trying to emigrate to this great nation from wherever they happen to have been living before. By desiring to secure its borders the United States is not attempting to deny the freedom and the opportunities that this great land represents to so many that do not live here…it is merely attempting to control the access.

Not deny it, not refuse it, but control it, as *every other sovereign nation must and does*.

Anonymous I realize you could not control the accidental circumstances that caused you to remain here when you were 11. I realize that the choices made by others, then, were not the choices you, at 11, would have made. But, Anonymous, you aren’t 11 any longer. You’ve reached the age of majority (we must assume) and have now been making choices for yourself for several years. The entire tone of your story is one of fear and anxiety and victimization. But have you chosen to take any of the positive steps necessary to mitigate any of those feelings or circumstances?

At what point do you break the chain of illegal conduct begun by your parents so long ago; the pattern of unlawful behavior displayed by them at that time and by you since, and simply do the right…the lawful thing now?

By your own account you have benefited greatly from being in the United States. You have contributed much to this great nation and seem to have much yet to offer. Many hopes and dreams still to realize.

Would it not be more fulfilling for you to pursue your dreams here legally? To aspire toward and to obtain a lawful status in this nation, rather than continuing to compound the mistakes others made before, as well as those you have been making since?

At some point do you not say to yourself: “Yes, this is going to be very tough, but if I’m ever going to be able to stop living in fear here…to stop imposing these unnecessary limits upon every aspect of my life…I must do what’s right and legitimize my status in this amazing place that has become my home”?

People from other countries have a much harder time immigrating here. Just because Mexicans can cross the Rio Grande and crosssing the border is much easier doesn't make it any more right. All of the services that these illegals use take away from real citizens. Mexico either needs to reimburse us these costs or close the borders for good. We can't go to Mexico and get the free services that these illegals get here.

The Mexican people need to fix their own country instead of coming here for all of our services. We are already taxed to the max.

Illegal immigrants—some interesting stats

40 percent of all workers in L. A. County (L. A. County has 10.2 million people) are working for cash and not paying taxes. This was because they are predominantly illegal immigrants, working without a green card.

95 percent of warrants for murder in Los Angeles are for illegal aliens.

75 percent of people on the most wanted list in Los Angeles are illegal aliens.

Over two-thirds of all births in Los Angeles County are to illegal alien Mexicans on MediCal, whose births were paid for by taxpayers.

Nearly 25 percent of all inmates in California detention centers are Mexican nationals here illegally.
Over 300,000 illegal aliens in Los Angeles County are living in garages.

The FBI reports half of all gang members in Los Angeles are most likely illegal aliens from south of the border.

Nearly 60 percent of all occupants of HUD properties are illegal.

Twenty-one radio stations in L. A. are Spanish speaking.

In L. A. County 5.1 million people speak English and 3.9 million speak Spanish out of a total of 10.2 million.

The above is attributed to the Los Angeles Times by the California Coalition for Immigration Reform, based in Huntington Beach, who further state:

Less than 2 percent of illegal aliens are picking our crops, but 29 percent are on welfare.

Over 70 percent of the United States¡¥ annual population growth (and over 90 percent of California, Florida, and New York) results from immigration.

The cost of immigration to the American taxpayer in 1997 was, after subtracting taxes immigrants pay, a net $70 billion a year, [Professor Donald Huddle, Rice University].

The lifetime fiscal impact (taxes paid minus services used) for the average adult Mexican immigrant is a negative number.

Over 39 percent of inmates in federal prisons are illegal aliens.

When the U.S. Census recently proclaimed that our population was now 300 million, they were factoring in immigration at a rate of one every 21 seconds.

Wow! This story really puts our current (Failed) immigration system in perspective. There are so many people living in the shadows of our society that function every day as normal citizens but are excluded from everyday rights that we all take for granted.
