The Long Beach Junior Chamber is a great place to start:

    www.lbjuniorchamber.org.

The demographic of their membership is 21-40 but affiliates can be any age and they are also very well connected with other local volunteer groups that operate in and around the Long Beach area.

The Long Beach Junior Chamber and it's affiliated tax-exempt Charitable Foundation is heavily involved in many volunteer efforts in Long Beach including, but not limited to: Adopt-A-Teacher (benefiting local teachers), Children's Shopping Spree (benefiting under-privileged students in the area), 30-minute Beach Clean Ups, Relay for Life (benefiting cancer research) and many, many more.

Contact the Long Beach Nonprofit Partnership, a great organization that serves all the area nonprofits. Cyndi, or anyone else, can give there skill sets, what they are looking for, areas of interest (animals, kids, health, education, etc) and they can try to match her up with the right organization. Website: www.lbnp.org or call 562-290-0018.

My nonprofit 501c3 Community Action Team (CAT) is seeking volunteers for this Saturday's "30-Minute Beach Cleanup", the Oct. 26 Haute Dog Howl'oween Parade and the Nov. 27 Long Beach Turkey Trot. And, I have about 25 other annual events that I need help with. Contact me at Justin@JustinRudd.com and I'll send you the complete list of activities and dates. We'd appreciate all volunteers. And, I have a e-newsletter every month that lists our upcoming volunteer projects.

    Ms Castro,

I'd like you to please also consider helping The Los Cerritos Wetlands Land Trust , to help advocate to acquire and restore wetlands and protect ocean habitat, The Surfrider Foundation , to help us bring back our clean beach, ocean and waves, as we lower the breakwater, and more, and maybe Neighborhoods First too. This group often stands up for quality of life and safe and quiet neighborhoods when the City or another is pressing a flawed or unpopular idea. For example, they have helped prevent the airport from turning into a mini LAX.

Be a little careful with the Chamber because lately, time after time, they seem to line up against the community in favor of business at all costs, or they veer hard ...hard right of where most of us feel comfortable Just proceed with your Eyes open around there, that's all. Google Randy Gordon first maybe.

We hand out holiday food and toys at The Long Beach Rescue Mission too, FYI.

The Long Beach Democratic Club also has a lot of rewarding projects too. All these groups are also listed.

Also, join a local HomeOwners Association in your area, and if you don't have one, simply put one together. The City can help in many ways .

Finally, the Councilperson in your area can also be a huge resource, so network with them too ?

Thanks !! You can make a BIG diffirence !

If you like sports or kids you can always check out a youth sports league, there are about 8 little leagues, AYSO soccer programs, Friday Night Lights & Pop Warner Football, Swim and Water Polo programs, and more. If you don't care for sports consider Boys and Girls Club or a scouting program like Girl/Boy Scouts or Campfire Girls.
You can have fun and make a difference in a kid's life that could leave a lasting legacy, not just for the child but society in general.

Yes, there is a soup kitchen downtown. It's at Christian Outreach in Action on the corner of Third and Elm: see their website at www.coalongbeach.org or contact info@coalongbeach.org.

Look into joining the Junior League of Long Beach (or stop by their general membership meetings). They are a group made up of women and focus of volunteering activities within Long Beach.

It's difficult trying to find volunteering opportunities on your own (I know, I tried). The Junior League has the connections within Long Beach that promotes activities geared towards the community.

If you're interested in clean water and restoring our local beaches send Surfrider Foundation in Long Beach an email and we'll be in touch! We welcome new volunteers with an interest in the community and the time to help on weekends. Our website is www.lbsurfrider.org and looking forward to hearing from you!
