someone should ask robert the delta chi why he loves long beach so much. some of his antics from the fraternity days are down right disgusting. i have nothing against homosexuals, or same sex marriage...but i don't understand why he is so closeted about his homosexuality. the gay votes must not be important enough.

As liberal as I am, I can't help but agree that a little moderation is in good order.

None the less, I find myself shocked that such a seemingly innocent article fostered such discussion. I've noticed Mr. Garcia lunching at Smooth's before, but I never realized he was such a controversial guy. I can't wait to introduce myself.

How about a real Democrat? I heard something about Evan Anderson Braude? He was in office before from that area, he could the real Democrat that could help the area. Robert Garcia helped George W. Bush get into office twice, can we afford that person in Long Beach Govt? That is scary! At least DeLong and Suja were not working for Bush in 2000 and 2004! Garcia is not the Change We Need! Al Gore, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton would NEVER support Garcia, and neither should we! He worked to get Bush into office! I could understand if he supported Bush in 2000 and then Kerry in 04, but he did not! He wanted more of Bush in 2004 and started a Young Republican group in 2005! We must do whatever it takes to stop Bush/Garcia!!!

First, how would Robert Garcia be different from the previous first district councilmembers?
What does he bring to the table? What can he do to drastically improve the current conditions that exist in his district? I agree with his comments, when it pertains to The Pike and the other retail disasters of the downtown area. However, what can he do about it?
Second, it should be considered disturbing, that noted Long Beach lobbyists are supposedly lining up campaign contributions for Robert. I believe, this insinuates Mr. Garcia will be bought and paid for, by the same special interests that have gotten Long Beach into its current mess.
Finally, I'm not saying Robert Garcia wouldn't be a solid councilmember for the first district. But, if he continues on the same path of so many previously elected Long Beach officials, his impact would be minimal. After all, what have the decades of previous Long Beach politicians done for the city?

Great article about a great person. My 72nd birthday is tomorrow. I come from an eastern political family and have a long history of activism. Robert has been my personal choice for about two years. Since I have no children I often wonder what happens when I am older. Robert makes me less fearful of the aging process. I feel safe having him in office.
I intend to work on his campaign and walk the precincts with him.
Thanks for the great and honest press you provide for the people of Long Beach.

Gary may be the most naive, least effective, most unpopular, least fair representative that many can recall around here ? He has broken promise after promise too ? What we see, is disappointment , and what we get are lies, special deals for friends and tons of upset people filing, or preparing to file, Lawsuits...Appeals...Concern Memo's...ugh !! The list of let downs just grows and grows !

The latest, it seems, is an attempt at piling Millions of easy dollars on his supporters and close friends, Dean and Berger with this Wetlands exchange scheme ? Wow does it appear that he squandering City assets while showering huge tax dollars on his intimates this time ??

Pat, you love him, so talk to him for us, remind him that we only need about 6,700 signatures to send him home?

I assume that by "anchor baby" you are using what the dictionary defines as "a derogatory term for a child born in the United States to immigrants or other non-citizens, regardless of the immigration status of the parents. The term refers to the supposed role of the child, as a U.S. citizen, in facilitating immigration through family reunification under the provisions of the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965. Besides the fact that it is derogatory, your use of the term is also wrong. Robert Garcia was five years old when he came to the United States with his family---which was escaping the Peruvian terrorist group Shining Path. Thus, he was not a citizen until granted amnesty by President Ronald Reagan.

The BSBA doesn't endorse candidates, DeLong or otherwise . . .

I do think it is likely that Rotondo currently "supports" DeLong, after all he is a "pro-business" elected official. But so what? I'm sure most business people support him, and so do most 3rd District residents.

Wow, John B! Seems you have some problems with Robert's world view, since he indicated that because he was an anchor baby from immigrant parents, who were legalized by the Reagan administration, which informed his initial political leanings quite heavily, according to him. Also, according to him, because he's gay, he has some pretty strong views about gay marriage! A pivotal issue around these parts, so I'm told!

Carrying on with the crazy idea that people hold political views based on their background, though the journalist apparently avoided the question, I'm betting Robert may have some wild idea's about illegal immigrants. Somebody crazy might even conclude that he may act on those beliefs, based on his background, when making decisions on the City Council!

I know, I know. It's against the law to think such things, but some people are rebels when thinking things to themselves, and have not a care for your esteemed thought police, even though we know they're everywhere.

As far as his age... yeah! Let's get this thirty year old into the middle of city planning in general, and business building on Pine in particular! At thirty years of age, he's had plenty of time to develop a realistic overview of what makes a city, with some particular problems, go in to prosper! No "learning on the job" for Robert!

Anyway, you should send him an outraged, yet smarmy email regarding your "nature vs nurture" views, why one trumps the other at different times according to your good judgement, and the best way for him to conform to them, as well as your "brain laws" regarding how people are supposed to sum up their world.

Your subjective views on human behavior seem very important to you, John B., so they must be very important to everyone.

Delaying that email would not only be cheating Robert as a person, I suspect you might be committing some kind of thought tort.
